FAQ - Ivoclar® Smile

Your questions – our answers.
Using the app

Ivoclar Smile enables a patient to visualize their future smile in a fast, simple and at the same time professional way. It shows the esthetic results of a treatment in real-time and helps the dentist to build the patient’s trust right from the start. The new app offers the patient an easy-to-use tool to envisage themselves with their beautiful new smile. Together with the dentist they will gain the confidence to start the treatment, and they will be able to share this future smile with their friends. Ivoclar Smile is a fast and simple way for both the dentist and patient to launch the treatment together. Communication becomes simple and engaging because the patient is motivated throughout the process.

Ivoclar Smile aims to guide users through the application by using well-known UI components and expedient journeys.

  • On the one hand, the basic version of Ivoclar Smile is designed to obtain a fast output in an easy way. This version can be used for free.
  • On the other hand, Ivoclar Smile enables professionals to apply advanced adjustment possibilities. This version of the application must be purchased.

When taking a picture of your patient with Ivoclar Smile, please use the rear camera of your iPad. Better front views of the face can be taken with the rear camera. Make sure that the subject is not too far away. The head should fill out the markings on the screen.

The quality of the preview essentially depends on the lighting. For better results, use bright light from the front to fully illuminate the face and mouth area. Light only from behind or above has a negative effect on the picture quality.

Ivoclar Smile uses modern technologies such as Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence to incorporate the potential treatment outcome into a currently captured picture of the real world.

No, the tooth shade or tooth shape cannot be identified with the app.

Yes, pictures can be taken whilst an OptraGate is in place.

No, taking pictures whilst the patient is wearing fixed braces will lead to suboptimal results because the app cannot recognize the natural tooth structure.

To present the result of the preview to your patient, switch on the front-facing camera. The patient can now see themselves with the dental makeover as if they were looking into a mirror.

There are two categories of tooth libraries:

  • Natural – lifelike esthetics
  • Denture – removable restorations
