The new simplified universal composite from Ivoclar streamlines direct restorative treatments with 4 innovative features

Schaan, Liechtenstein – 24 March 2025

The Ivoclar Group, one of the world's leading manufacturers of integrated solutions for high-quality dental applications with an extensive product and systems portfolio for dentists, dental technicians and dental hygienists is launching Tetric® plus, a new simplified composite specially designed to set new standards in universal composites. Tetric plus takes its name from the Greek prefix 'tetra', meaning 'four', and this number is central to its key product features. It incorporates four essential elements: 4 shades, 4-mm layer thicknesses, 4-quadrant applicability and an optimized 4-filler technology.

Composites play a crucial role in modern dentistry, in particular in direct restorative procedure. They allow for minimally-invasive restorative treatments, where damaged tooth structure is removed gently and reconstructed with composite. Given their excellent adhesion to tooth structure and high durability, composites provide long-lasting, functional restorations. Additionally, they offer outstanding esthetic integration by seamlessly adapting to the natural tooth colour and structure thanks to their optical properties. Ivoclar is setting new standards in this field with Tetric® plus, offering simplified shade matching with just 4 shades, increments of up to 4 mm for greater efficiency, versatile application options in all 4 quadrants and an optimized 4-filler technology for excellent handling and esthetic results.

4 shades for easy shade selection

Tetric plus revolutionizes shade selection in dentistry, allowing for easy shade matching with its innovative colour cloud concept. Just 4 shades cover the entire spectrum of the classical VITA[1] shades. This makes selecting the right shade not only simpler but also more efficient. Tetric plus is a truly simplified universal composite that excels in esthetic applications, even in the anterior region where esthetic demands are particularly high.

To facilitate application, the right shade can be selected quickly and easily. The combination of high translucency in its uncured state and the translucency shift after curing ensures that Tetric plus reliably cures in layers of up to 4 mm in thickness while achieving an enamel-like translucency that is ideally suitable for esthetic applications in the anterior region.

Thanks to its exceptional shade adaptation, Tetric plus creates an outstanding chameleon effect: In its cured state, the material absorbs and scatters light in a way that closely mimics natural tooth structure, allowing it to blend almost seamlessly with the surrounding tooth structure. This high level of adaptation is achieved through the perfect combination of monomers, fillers and pigments.

The evidence-based shade concept of Tetric plus is based on extensive research by Ivoclar: The natural tooth colours of nearly 400 individuals where measured and analysed to identify three colour clusters that optimally cover the shade range of natural teeth. "We based the shade development on the range that covered all natural tooth colours that we measured – it is, so to speak, the colour space of natural teeth,” explains Dr Thorsten Bock, Director R&D Organic Chemistry at Ivoclar.

These three shade clusters form the basis for the development of the Tetric plus shades and are aligned with the VITA[1] shades. Furthermore, the additional shade Bleach plus was introduced to optimally match whitened teeth. As a result, Tetric plus ensures an excellent esthetic integration.

4 mm for maximum efficiency

Another remarkable feature of Tetric plus is its ability to accommodate variable layer thicknesses ranging from 0.1 to 4 mm, allowing for greater flexibility while also reducing material consumption. Another notable advantage is its reliable curing time of just 3 seconds[2], that allows for a fast and easy application. These short curing times streamline workflows, minimize interruptions for dentists and enhance treatment efficiency. By enabling faster and more efficient restorations, Tetric plus not only saves valuable time but also improves the overall patient experience.

4 quadrants for universal application

Tetric plus is a simplified universal composite that is suitable for all cavity classes, from Class I to V. With just one product, dentists can treat a wide range of indications in all 4 quadrants, significantly reducing material consumption and streamlining the workflow. For maximum handling convenience, Tetric plus is available in two viscosities: sculptable and flowable.

Tetric plus Fill is characterized by a sculptable viscosity. High user satisfaction with the stability of the modelled fissures showcases the product’s strengths. The viscosity can be adjusted, if desired, by heating the material up to 68 °C, without compromising its mechanical properties.

Tetric plus Flow, by contrast, offers a universal viscosity that stands out due to its exceptional thixotropic properties. This flowable composite combines precision and high stability with excellent flowability, enabling quick and efficient volume replacements. Furthermore, Tetric plus Flow adapts smoothly to cavity walls and has a self-levelling effect, providing for ideal cavity adaptation. A particularly practical advantage is that Tetric plus Flow requires no covering layer, which simplifies the treatment process even further. Its versatility empowers dentists to leverage the composite’s unique properties, optimizing treatment efficiency and outcomes.

4 fillers for outstanding results

The quality of Tetric plus is defined by its innovative 4-filler technology, which integrates a combination of nano- and micro-particles to deliver outstanding mechanical properties. Tetric plus ensures reliable curing for layers of up to 4 mm while offering high radiopacity to facilitate accurate detection during diagnosis. The mechanical properties include high flexural strength (133 MPa), high compressive strength along with low wear and low shrinkage stress, reducing the risk of marginal gaps.

Optimized for improved application

Tetric plus is more than just another composite: it is designed to simplify the daily workflow of dentists and optimize their treatment efficiency. With easy shade selection and short curing times, dentists can focus entirely on patient care, while delivering efficient and high-quality work. In summary, Tetric plus combines 4 shades with 4-mm layer thicknesses, universal applicability in all 4 quadrants and an innovative 4-filler technology, making it the ideal solution for the demands of modern dentistry.
